Martín Azúa continues exploring the relationship between ceramics and nature. The project began in 1999, when for the first time he left porous ceramic vases in the River Urederra in Navarra in order to collect “the natural stain”.

Martin Azua presents pieces that are light containers. These are vases without bases with cuts and deformations that are deposited over a candle. The vibrant light of the candle reveals the inside and marks some exterior parts. The intention is not to make lamps but that the light alters the perception of the vase.

Me Manantial / Martin Azua


Manantial is an invitation to discover and get to know natural processes. It proposes the reproduction of an ecosystem by means of soil, stones and plants able to give back to water its natural balance. It is not an easy task, it takes time and dedication, maybe a whole life.
Like water drops which fall in the interior of a cave purified and enriched by the life cycle of water

In Mediterranean culture, “dysfunction” can be seen as the anthropological ability to find a way round, an ad hoc solution to make up for a shortcoming.
Here, the bowls gain a new ‘stability’ from an added support or prop which holds them up. It is an instinctive gesture, not designed as the only or definitive solution.

This is a redesign of the traditional Spanish botijo which brings back a convivial and ecological way to drink fresh water. The water cools down even under the sun thanks to the porosity of the clay. The new form is somewhere between a bottle and a Tetra Brik and has a 1.5 litre capacity, ideal for all uses.

Natural Stain is a reflection on natural decoration. It is a series of very porous white ceramic vases which where left in natural spaces in the middle of nowhere for a year during which time they where colonized by mosses and other organic growths creating micro landscapes bringing to light the power that nature has to appropriate the artificial and leave its mark.
